The Our Flag Means Death Fan Crew is excited to announce our June fundraiser benefiting SAGE USA!
In HBO Max’s Our Flag Means Death, aristocrat Stede Bonnet realizes he only has one life, and he needs to live it for himself. With this realization, Stede leaves home to begin a life of uncertainty as a pirate. He sacrifices the familiar and defies others’ expectations of him in the hope that there is more out there—he just has to find it.
Many LGBTQ elders have had to make similar decisions in order to live their truths. We want to honor the contributions and sacrifices LGBTQ+ elders have made and continue to make today.
Services & Advocacy for LGBT Elders (SAGE) is a nonprofit organization that advocates and provides resources for older adults in the LGBTQ+ community across the US. From advocacy to housing initiatives, SAGE seeks to provide security and stability through programs that establish senior centers, provide caregivers, and offer clinical and social services. Building off the momentum of the Stonewall uprising and the emerging LGBTQ+ civil rights movement, a group of activists came together to ensure that LGBTQ+ older people could age with respect and dignity. SAGE formed a network of support for LGBTQ+ elders that’s still going and growing today. SAGE is more than just an organization. It’s a movement of loving, caring activists dedicated to providing advocacy, services, and support to older members of the LGBTQ+ community. LGBTQ+ elders fought— and still fight—for our rights. HOW CAN CREATORS OR OTHER DONORS PARTICIPATE?
You can create something to list for raffle, auction, or on a “slot” basis. We encourage creators to post the commissions and/or items they’ve selected for the fundraiser as they normally would on their own social media platforms, but indicate that they accept proof of donation to SAGE as payment. Tag your fundraiser post(s) with #SAGEtheSea! OFMD fan works are encouraged, but all commissions and creative products are welcome! NSFW friendly!
WHAT CAN CREATORS OR OTHERS DONATE?
Ideas include: digital art or commissions, physical items, fanfic, stickers, handmade items and crafts, purchased items, creating playlists, paintings, prints; there are countless possibilities!
Sample items that have come up already: fanfic commissions, art commissions, handmade goods (stuffed animals, signs, jewelry, bags, crocheted or knitted goods, accessories), mugs, and pins. Or, you can buy something to donate for people to get, with all proceeds going to SAGE!
HOW CAN DONORS CONTRIBUTE TO SAGE?
For items that are bid on or claimed, donate directly to SAGE using our dedicated donation link. If you’d like to just donate without putting it towards a specific item or creator, you can also do that. International donations welcome! The donation link is: https://tinyurl.com/SAGEtheSea .
You can also check if your employer does matching donations, and increase your impact!
